my filter rattled and died - help

I have a little 2.5 gallon Eclipse Explorer aquarium which has the built in filter with bio-wheel for my betta. This morning it was rattling. I turned it off and turned it on again and what sounded like a pebble in there moved all around as the water came back up and then must have lodged somewhere to block things turning. Nothing happens now. This appears to be a sealed system so I can't see how to open it up to look inside.
Anyone familiar with this pump to give pointers? How long can my bio wheel sit not turning before the good bacteria die? I can probably go out and just buy another one in a few hours but I doubt the stores are open yet.

how are you getting on ?
did you get another filter ?

when you set up a new tank, hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor, that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.

I have had snails top my AC pump by clogging the blades and I had a mass of plant material stop it. I wish I had any information about your filter but I have never had one nor heard how to take then apart.

I would try to flush the filter with running water on high and maybe the obstruction will come out. Keep the media away from fresh water so it stays seeded but other than that I don't know.

I figured out how to take the impellor part out and there was a snail in there! He's out and it's fine now.
