moving a tank (across the house)

I have a 55 gallon tank that will most likely be getting moved across the house. Its about a forty foot trip but it has the potential to go very badly if I do this wrong.

What I was planning on doing was bringing the water level down to substrate, putting all the fish in a 5 gallon bucket, running the filters on a second bucket.

THEN i was going to get help to put the tank on my dining table while the base gets moved and leveled. Then place the tank back, fill it back up and put the fish back.

Since I plan on having this thing in pieces I was wondering if it'd be okay to go ahead and paint the back of the tank while it's on the table. I used spray paint on my small tank and that went well. I have a canopy I can set up to actually do the painting inside (I use it when airbrushing), but I was debating on using something brush on, to minimize the chance of something getting into the tank. Will brush on acrylic hold up okay, or do I need to think bigger?

How long do I have before the break down starts to affect my BB? I think I can do the whole thing in about two to three hours. Less, if I can find someone under the age of sixty to help me.

Your plan sounds fine to me. The only thing I'm not sure on is the painting of the back. There will be some drying time before you can move the tank to its final location. Not sure how long that would be but I think acrylic dries pretty fast. Although, you may want to do more than one coat.
