moving filter to new tank for cycling

i have a 40 gallon tank with a baby oscar and i have a 75 gallon tank waiting for him. when i move him to the new tank can i just transfer his filter to the new tank without having to wait to cycle the tank. There will also be floating plants in the new tank to help lighten the load.

This is what I did when I upgraded from a 20 gallon to a 55 and I had no issues. It will definitely speed up the cycle. I also put a couple handfuls of gravel from the old tank into a panyhose and hung it by the filter intake in the new tank. Just be sure to monitor your ammonia and nitrite levels daily for a couple weeks to watch for spikes and don't add any new fish until your sure the new tank is stable. Good luck!

150 Gallon - Mostly American Cichlids
135 Gallon - Angelfish Community
75 Gallon - Odd couple (Polleni/Angelfish)
55 Gallon - African tank
20 Gallon Long - QT
10 Gallon - Empty
