Do add fish slowly,, This according to your post's is very new tank and adding fishes too many at once can result in ammonia/nitrites becoming temporarily high and it don't take much to have negative effect on fish.
These fish are prolly small fish right now? so the canister you have will be fine for a few month's.=(save some money up).
Then were it me,, i would purchase second filter such as Eheim 2217 and just fill it with biological media and maybe one Coarse pad that comes with the filter.
Between these two filter's ,you would have plenty of mechanical/biological filtration and could rotate cleaning them every other week.
With fish you are considering,, I would not let the filter's go more than two week's between cleaning, especially once the fish grow beyond the five, six inch mark, which could be in three or four months depending on size purchased.
Sure some folks go month's between cleaning of canister's, but large cichlids ,or groups of cichlid's,,create three times as much waste or more, than your average community aquarium.
Hope some of this helps.
