Micro Organism Aquarium

Okay i got a 10 gallon. and i want to do a native micro organism aquarium with maby some native fish like minows, i live in idaho so it would be species from here. i was thinking of going to some local ponds and just gathering water and culture some organisms from there, then add some freshwater shrimp both caught and bough from a lfs, and hten gathering a few miows and some other specimens.. Whaat do you gusy think, collecting tips and such? among other things?

I haven't done this before so I can't really offer any advice. However, I'm interested in doing something similar so let us know how it goes!

okay, ill put updates, im contiplating using my 10 w a sweet male paradise fish in there for it or just buying a 10 or 20 gallon once i get sum money, and then filtration, i need something that can handle the fish but wont kill the hydra dyfia and other micro organisms.

There's a user on this site, Redpaulhus who's set up a LOT of north american native biotopes...I'd recommend PM'ing him and asking him to chime in on this thread. He's real busy, hasn't been on much lately, but it's worth trying :)

I can say that gathering most wild fish, in most states, is illegal without a permit. Just something to be aware of. I think it's a little different if you gather from a private pond, but definitely try to avoid state parks and such.

The North American Native Fishes Association is also probably a good resource to check out.

okay, im really only looking for a few minnows to go, i want it to be mostly freshwater shrimp, hydra, dalfyia, snails, and other smaller organisms
