Many cycling questions

Hi
About 6 days ago I started my aquarium and started cycling it with stability and fish food. I have been adding the half cap of stability every day and a couple fish flakes every 12 hours. On day 4 the ammonia was around .30 and nitrite at 0. On day 5 ammonia was around .75 and nitrite still at 0. First of all I was wondering roughly how long it takes for fish food to break down and give out ammonia. Secondly I heard it was more accurate and easier to cycle with pure ammonia. Should i buy some pure ammonia take out the fish food and raise the ppm to about 5, or just continue with stability and fish food.

Personally ,I would continue with what you are doing. Using liquid ammonia takes about the same length of time as the method you are using. But with your method ,there is no daily dosing or testing needed. Just test for nitrites after a couple weeks. When ammonia drops ,nitrites will appear and then they too will drop after a week maybe a little more or less. Flake food breaks down quickly in water and considering that most flake food contains animal protein, you can be assured that ammonia is being produced as evidenced by your ammonia readings.
With ALL methods of (cycling) fish should be added slowly two or three at a time once the tank has matured or (cycled) ,and a week in between new additions to the tank.
What would speed the process ,is some used filter material from a friends tank or from possibly your local fish stores tank but this is risky buisness unless you are sure that the donor material or seed material came from disease free tank.
Fish Food method works well and no water changes are needed during the process and no fish are harmed.
You simply wait for nitrates to appear after ammonia and nitrites read zero and then change out 75 to 80 percent of the water before adding a few (two or three fish).

If used as directed I don't think it will harm anything. To be honest, I don't have much faith in bacterial supplements but others here have used it with success.

I tryied the pure ammonia thing but found that it was really hard to find truely pure ammonia. I found "pure" ammonia only to find out that it really was not "pure" after adding it in my tank and having suds everywhere from the surfactant that was in it. There was no list of things that was in it but it said Pure ammonia on the front label, so, I think the way you are doing it is working. You have ammonia, soon you will have Nitrite, then soon you will have none of both and will have a small amount of nitrates. Your tank will be cycled and ready for a few fish. I would still not fully stock your tank at one time though. The whole process should take about 7 weeks.
