Maintaining a sand substrate?

I just put sand in my 10 gallon tank that will (hopefully) soon have a dwarf puffer. How do I maintain it? Is there a special way to siphon it? Are there any special things that need to be done for it?

Hold the syphon just above the sand, about 1/2" or so and suck off all the debris on top. When you're done getting all the debris either run your fingers thru the sand (or use a chopstick or plastic fork) to stir the sand. This will eliminate any anaerobic pockets. Make sure your filter is off when you do this so you don't suck any sand that may be floating around into your filter.

150 Gallon - Mostly American Cichlids
135 Gallon - Angelfish Community
75 Gallon - Odd couple (Polleni/Angelfish)
55 Gallon - African tank
20 Gallon Long - QT
10 Gallon - Empty

You could also get yourself some Malaysian trumpet snails. They'll provide a food source for your puffer but he probably won't be able to eat all of them so they'll help keep your sand stirred for you.
