Lighting question..

Hi.new to the forum here, this is my first post. 2 years ago i decided to get back into the hobby after taking a break for some years,i have a 55gl setup right now, fake plats. I have a question about lighting....everytime i buy some fish at the store they look so colorfull...when they get home and ajusted they are all pretty dull...I mean, you can see the same colors, just not as brillently...What kind of light will bring thier colors out more? I wanted to bring home a small shoal of the nicest blue tetras i have ever seen yesterday, bright blue, purple, green, yellows & oranges to them...but i thought as soon as i get them they will just look silver with alittle hint of blue...so i diddnt get them...but i would like to go back before they are all sold out...they were the best i have seen!

What you are likely dealing with is not a lighting issue. When fish are introduced to new surroundings their colors fade. After a number of days to several weeks the color will come back. Feeding a variety of foods usually helps.

As to lighting, you do want to replace your bulbs every 9 months or so. The blue spectrum contributes to color, and it fades quickly with time.

Well the colors never come back like they were in the store...my waters good & i feed flake, freezedried & live bloodworms & frozen krill. The lights at the shops even look differant, they look not as bright but brighter at the same time...i dont know how to explain it! I also have a black background & black gravel in hopes it would bring out the fish's colors better.

ive always liked the aquasun bulbs in my 48" fixtures. I understand that they arent great for plants but they have a pinkish hue to them which makes the colors stand out a bit more. In my 110g I have 1 aquasun and 1 regular full spectrum (i think its an aqua rays) and it looks good me thinks.

Dedicated, converted, lowes / home depot bulb buyer!
