My 30 gal. aquarium is still cycling. The fish store lady tested the water for me (again) and said our tank is "stuck in a cycle." She suggested a 15 gallon water change, which we did. We are down to one platy and he has seemed to be dying for the last three days. All day today he has been lying on the gravel upside down or on his side, but his fins are still moving. What do I do? At first I wondered if it was possible for him to recover. Now I wonder if it would be kind to euthanize. What should I do with him?

This is just a shoot from the hip because I'm a beginner myself, but do you have your own test kit? If not, you should definitely get one!

Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Freshwater Master Test Kit at PETCO

That's what I use.

At this point, there is not much you can do besides damage control. The "cloud" you see is actually the needed bacteria that keep your fish safe. Normally they will bloom like this, and then settle into the filter and gravel. Water changes are important, but if you remove too much water like that you remove the good bacteria along with the ammonia and nitrites. Try to do more consistent, smaller water changes. 10 to 15%. Either every day or every other day.

Are you treating the new water you're putting in the tank?

What is the temp of your tank?

What do you use for a filter?
