I am betting the same thing that its right in front of us and we don't see it.

To bad she removed the water from the tank, a lab test might find something that kills like some toxic chemical...

Maybe she could fill it up with water again then let it set for a week and have it tested?

She could do that to but if it's an electric problem... Well... Not sure.
But as long as she unplugs any filter, heater and anything that uses electricity while she tests the water or comes in touch with it she should be fine.
Just be extra careful electricity is one bad boy when not used right.
