If this will work could you suggest anything else.. maybe 3 larger fish with some color ? Something about 3 inches. If they need 5 can they fit ? Seems like there enough room

I would stay with the smaller gourami, a group of 3 with one male, two females. This will allow more choice in tankmates than will a "larger" gourami. Many people forget that gourami and cichlids are basically the same when it comes to their temperament, and a largish territorial male of either will likely consider the tank "his." Not all other fish can manage against this.
This opens up a number of suitable fish; many of the characins would work, just be sure to avoid any even remotely suspect of fin nipping. The gourami and the glass cats would be prime targets. There are several rasbora species. The barbs and danio are all out, due to their hgh activity which will unsettle the glass cats even more than the gourami.
