keeping cichlids together??

So I walked into a petmart to see what fish were available and get an idea of what I wanted for my 29 gallon tank. I started to talk to a customer who told me he also had a 29 gallon tank. And he bought 2 electric yellow cichlids, 1 acei cichlid or something like that, and 2 gbr's. He was told they would get along because they were all cichlids and the recommended minimum tank was a 29 gallon. This cant be right information correct?? Other then the obvious fact the tank is too small even for just 5 fish.

They were given AWFUL advice. The GBRs are as good as dead.

Saying all cichlids can get along is like saying that all people can get along. Most certainly wrong.

The biggest distinction is whether fish are afican or american. They should never be mixed. And even then, just because they are all african doesn't mean that they all get along either. Same with american cichlids. Generally its best to keep fish together that are from the same region with similar temperaments.

125 - BGK, chanchito cichlid, pictus cats, silver dollars, palmas bichir
125 - cichlids (severums, bolivian rams, chocolate), rainbows ( turquoise, red), loaches (angelicus, zebra, kuhli and horseface), plecos (BN, RL and clown), denison barbs, tiretrack eel, pearl gouramis, betta
90 - Congo tetras, african knife, upside down cats, spotted ctenopoma, kribensis, delhezzi bichir
2.5 - betta
