It's not that bad.:) Only those who originated from soft waters will benefit from that. Those who live in alkaline waters never will and will not last long like the Lake Tanganyikan cichlids.

If it's leaching that much tannin into the water, I'm wondering if its actually driftwood. There are other woods, such as welaby wood, which have a much higher tannin content. Can you post a pic of the wood you're having issues with? I can usually identify the different woods if I can see them clearly.
