So glad that you rescued them. I did not know the shelter took fish. Petco will take fish or pets to adopt out. They are so nice looking. How lucky they are to go into a nice 55 gal. aquarium as they can get up to 6" big.I would not put angelfish in anything smaller then a 30 gal. for a pair. Lucky you already have a mated pair. Most people have to get 5 or more and wait til they pair up and rehome the others that do not pair up. Nice pictures of your tank. I was wondering why you did not buy Bushy Nosed Plecos at the fish store. I have them in all my tanks and they only get about 4" big full grown. I would trade out the bigger plecos for the smaller ones as you know those ones you have get really really large. When they get so large they are hard to rehome them. I have long finned albino bushy nose plecos.I posted a picture.A tank that size you can get 3 BN plecos.
In the picture in the back I have a black plastic plumbers pipe for them to go in I got at Home Depot. They also like Cholla wood that I bought on www.Aquabid.com. If you can't fine BN plecos you can get them on Aquabid. Mine are tiny babies as my friend raises them. They grow very slow and the great thing is they stay small in size 4-5" max. I like the long finned ones as their fins are like butterflys when they get long but they have shortfinned BN.

Keep us posted if the eggs hatch from the angelfish. My friend used to breed angelfish. If they are in a community tank the fry get eaten. The angelfish will protect the fry but most end up like food unless taken out to grow in a grow out smaller tank. Get more plants. They like alot of plants at all levels.
Vallisneria is a good easy low light plant (Long & Tall ) looks like kelp and grows fast. It can be cut in any length. I have it in all my tanks. They also have a Spiral Val that looks the same but grows in a spiral.
www.sweetaquatics.com has alot of plants that is mail order. It's a good website if you want to look up plants and the care of them before buying them at a local fish store. In fact you can see the Vallisneria in the picture I posted of my BN pleco in the background.

Here is a website that my friend that used to get supplies from called Angels+. They have great food and medicated flake food also which is really nice. I bought some food and medicated flakes from them. They also sell angelfish and you may be able to tell what kind you have by the pictures. The owner Steve is really nice also as I asked him a question and he gets back to you right away. He has alot of experience in Angelfish. Here's the website:
www.angelsplus.com

What area are you from? I can look up aquarium clubs in my Tropical Fish magazine by State or country. Those places are the best to get nice plants at. Mine has a mini auction before each meeting and that is where I switched out all my plastic plants for real plants. i do keep a couple of red plastic plants in the background as I have low light and red plants require a higher wattage to get the red color.

@TwinDad: The slate is actually leftover slate from a bathroom remodel we did in our house. I have a good amount left over. The plants are from Aquarium Plants (.com) they were all in amazing condition when they arrived, the swords are gorgeous! I also have their CO2 regulator which is awesome and definitely worth it. I have the older version and there's no CO2 on this tank - that's on the Discus tank.

@eileen: Our local shelter (Loudoun Country Animal Services) will take any animal (horses, reptiles, fish, rats, etc.). They are awesome!

I got the common plecos because they are cheap, effective, hardy, and I like how they look. I know they get huge but I plan on getting some much bigger tanks eventually. I do have two clown plecos in the discus tank and they are tiny, had them for years now. I never had a bristlenose but I'll look into them.

All the eggs were eaten immediately upon being laid! Have a look at the second video I posted if you haven't already, it's kind of funny (yet sad).

I'm trying to get the plants to fill in more, I may add CO2 eventually (I have it on the discus tank already). I have some kind of Vallisneria in the discus tank. I may transfer some plants back and forth.

I'll check out Angels+, thanks for the link.

I'm in Loudoun Country, Virginia. I know of a aquarium/plant club but I can't remember the name of it.

FYI I think one may be a Silver Pearlscale Angelfish and the other may be a Black Angelfish?

I have 1 place listed in the Clubs section of my magazine in Virginia.
Potomac Valley Aquarium Society
www.pvas.com

Not sure if that is near where you live or not. Your Pleco ate the eggs I would guess. I have a horned nerite snail in my Black Crystal shrimp tank and when it lays eggs my BN pleco eats them. I don't mind as the females will lay eggs all over the tank and I have black background and black sand and the eggs are white. They will not hatch most of the time. I like the Nerite snails as they do not eat plants and eat all kinds of algae and do a better job then the BN plecos in my tank.

Your plants will grow good with a Co2 system. I know of a someone in my tropical fish club and the plants grow so fast he brings the greenest lushes plant to the auctions .

Anyone looking for slate. I got my pieces for free at a landscape rock supply store. I was looking for rocks for my aquarium and asked if I could grab a few broken pieces and they told me that I can have any broken pieces as they can not sell them. I was willing to give him some money for them but they said to take if for free. I would ask first but maybe some of you that are looking for some nice rocks may be able to get some small pieces for free also. Landscape rock suppy stores are cheaper then the aquarium stores. I also bought some pool filter sand for some of my tanks at Lesles Pool supply 50lbs for about $12 a bag. It's a courser sand then fine play sand. Takes a long time to clean but worth the look in your tank. Anyone looking to do sand do a search on Sand Substrates on this forum. Picture of tank with the sand below.

@eileen: Thanks for the link. If you check the video I posted you can see the other angelfish eating all the eggs, just as they are laid. So mean!

I just watched the clip. I know they have alot of eggs and if they make the free swimming stage you will have alot of babies to raise.

I'm overloaded with breeding livebearers now.I have pink/scarlet fry, 13 platy fry as I rehomed the parents, Platies and swordtails like mollies are big waste producers,20+ or more of Blue Tiger endler fry, I also have a blue metalic endler that I'm trying to get nice looking babies from the 1 male I have. Take a look at the picture below of that 1 male I have. I have it with 2 Pastel blue ribbon fin virgin females that were in the tank with him for a few months now and just a few weeks ago dropped some fry also.I thought some might be eaten by my coummunity fish 2 honey gouarmis,7 neon tetras but I still see alot of babies and the one female Blue Tiger long fin is very pregnate still. I may send some out to someone in NC from aquabid.I only have 5 running tanks and 2 smaller QT tanks. I also have a blue wag swordtal female in my 18 gal. outside tub pond.

Your angelfish eating the eggs may be a blessing. Makes me want to go buy 1 just to eat some of the monthy drops for baby fry.I know that sounds mean but I can't keep them all, Survival of the fittest. I try to sell some baby fish cheap on craigslist in my area sometimes. My husband joked with me and told me to get a Cichlid to eat the fry. If I did that I would just have to have all Cichlids then. I like a Community tank over 1 kind of fish tank.

Papilla Close-up

Got some close-up shots of the black fish's papilla, from the looks of it, I'd say it's a male....?
