Josh's 55g Angelfish Tank

Getting Ready
We decided to adopt two angelfish from our local shelter. We have an empty 55 gallon tank setup which will be their new home. I got the tank, stand, light, filter (Fluval 404) and heater from Craig's List (all in one shot). The filter arrived without any media or an impeller so I had to borrow an Eheim filter from another tank until I the replacement parts arrive in the mail.

The light is your standard compact fluorescent which takes 4 65-watt bulbs. Two of the included bulbs are 50/50, and the other two are 10,000k but they're burned out - so I have 5 10,000k bulbs on the way (need two for my other tank, upstairs).

But now it is all setup and the filter is now running. I left some "slop" in the bottom of the tank - that and the fact that I'm using a filter which has been active for a while on an established tank - allows me to get Nitrate readings already. Don't worry, I'll continue to monitor this daily until I can be sure it's established.

I also added a four Anacharis today and a Common Pleco, here's how it looks so far, too bad I didn't get a chance to paint the back black:

Remember, only one 10,000k bulb is working, and one 50/50 is sort of working.

It looks really washed out. Maybe because the light is sitting directly on top of the glass canopy?

The extraneous tubing will be removed once I get the parts for the Fluval filter.

This monster won't be little for long!

I have a few large styrofoam boxes that I got from my dad (and one that I got when we picked up the Discuses) - the kind that temperature-sensitive medicine is shipped in - we'll use those to transport the Angelfish home tomorrow morning.

90gal: 2x Tangerine Discus, 2x Clown Pleco, 2x Catfish.
75gal + 10gal sump: 2x Large Goldfish, 1x Common Pleco, 14x Leopard Danios
55gal: 5x Angelfish, 1x Common Pleco, 8x SIlver Tip Tetras, 16x Neon Tetras, 8x Albino Corys

Looking good. Is this going to be a relatively heavily planted tank?
I wouldn't be too worried about your Pleco outgrowing your tank for now. I've had my small Common Pleco for 6 months now and he's only grown an inch or two.

Anyway, good luck, and do keep us updated.

We got the Angelfish on Saturday (5/21) morning. They were acclimated and added to the aquarium shortly after that. I'm a little worried about them (as indicated in this thread) but I think they'll be okay in time.

They have been eating flake food, I also tried to feed them Cichlid pellets but they weren't crazy about them - I'll try again some time. They aren't eating quick enough yet to catch the Bloodworms, apparently. The Pleco should enjoy them at least.

I placed an order for a bunch of plants which should arrive on Wednesday (5/25):
I also have parts on order so I can get the Fluval 404 up and running and replacement bulbs for the lighting, etc.

you might have better results growing plants under bulbs rated 6500K. you could also paint something black, or use black poster board to go behind the tank. wrapping paper even works, but be careful not to splash water as it will ruin both the paper and the poster board.

Yep, I wanted to spray-paint the back of the tank black as I've done w/other tanks but I didn't have time. So I'm going to just get a black background from the pet store and use that instead. Maybe I'll do that today.

Thumbs up

Okay, I added a black background today, and mounted the light into the canopy (before it was sitting directly on the tank and it was hard to get the glass canopy open). The Angelfish are much more active and seem happier today. Here are some updated pictures (sorry for the dirty glass, I should have cleaned it first):

Salt & Pepper in their new home!

Can you help identify what type of Angelfish they are?

Smile

I got the plants in today so I added them to the tank and as soon as I finished placing them, Salt (silver) started cleaning the leaves of the Amazon Swords. 20 minutes later I came back down stairs and they were in their full-on mating ritual! I guess this means they're happy!

Have a look!
