I've got crabs..

I bought a little red crab the other day.... (also mentioned this in my hazy thread) anyone had any good or bad experiences with them?

It's a small one, maybe 1.5"... I thought it would help clean up the left over food from the fish.... although it's always hiding and I've yet to see it eat anything.

Note: I have 4 cichlids in the tank with it.. all 1". Seems they've learned to leave him alone.

Do you know what kind of crab it is? I only have experience with one crab it's a fiddler crab. Although it was sold to me as a freshwater crab, it actually needs brackish water. On top of that it needs access to air above the water. If it does not get these things it will surely die in about a month. Some fish stores are savages.

I'll get one this weekend, the little e'fer or perhaps my cichlids dug a cavity behind a rock which he has now claimed as his 2nd home.. so I don't see him that much.

your aquarium will not work, if this is the crab you do have.

Salinity
Opinions on water salinity for this species vary. Frank Greco writes that while they range from fresh to brackish water in nature, in captivity it is best to keep them in 5-15 ppt salinity. That is 1/6 to 1/2 the salinity of seawater. My own experience agrees that keeping them in 100% fresh water is not tenable in the long term.

I have 3 of those little guys in freshwater. But they have an area to get on land. Ive had them for 4 months now and there such awesome guys. They let me hold them and all, and they love it when I let them out and put them in a little makeshift playpen I made out of legos.
