well when i looked in my tank 2day it seamed a bit cloudy in there i thought it was my filter so i removed it and cleand it out with hot water then put it back on and wen the water came out it was all cloudy so it is my filter i also saw a build up of brown goop in som places in the media pad so should i clean the pad now to to stop it from clouding my water . i also was wondering if it is ok to keep my lite turned off for 1 day of the week

Cleaning the filter with hot water will likely kill any bacteria you have in there (the brown goopy stuff) - whish is actually good stuff, you want to leave it. How often to you do water changes and how much? What size tank? It should be fine to leave the light off for a day, if you have plants they might miss it but should be fine.

yeah just wait a couple days, you dont want your tank spotless. cause some fish feed off of the stuff you may be cleaning. i myself have alot of brown stuff in my fiter and just learned that its good (jsm11482 thanks). so my suggestion is to ask before you clean something cause it can kill or hurt fish.

what kind of filter is it though? Bacteria doesn;t neccisarily look like brown goopy stuff. For instance, in a biowheel filter you will get bacteria growing on the biowheel and you'll get brown goopy stuff forming on the filter pad. The brown goopy stuff is just waste though and its perfectly fine to clean the pad. Some filters such as topfin and regent use the pad to store bacteria as well and there are certain procudures you must take when changing and cleaning filters. Knowing what kind of filter you have can help us tell you the best way to clean/change the filter media.

Your betta won't like intense direct light... move thelight farther away.
Also... did you rinse the gravel before you put it in?
And if you have a canister filter... or a filter that hangs off the side with a media pad... did you rinse them?
If you don't rinse carbon it will release dust in to your water.
This you can only eliminate through water changes.
