Sounds like you're doing things right! Good for you! I love to hear about responsible fish owners who do their research FIRST instead of just getting the fish and throwing them in the tank.

Background

The new store gave me a ring on the phone and said that backgrounds had finally come in..

Pick up a black back ground and also another 3 tiger barbs .All together 14 barbs one pleco In the tank(My goal is to add 6 more barbs)..

Also too ,A new glass top( expensive though, 69 dollars ,but i needed one )

I had some spare time ,so i took a part the 2 emperor 400 bio wheels and the shaft ,(it was filled with dirt strings ,etc) cleaned it all out and now the they're so quit .So there is no need to buy new filters ..

I'm new with the emperors, ive always used fluval or a ac 500
.I'm just wondering, do they sell foam sponges for the emperors? or do i have to be creative and make my own? i dont like using cartridges .

1 - 10 gallon - cray fish
1 - 90 gallon tank- 32 tiger barbs ,1 pleco ,2 snails.1 amazon sword , 1 red lotus , bushes of water sprite , 12 stems of rotala indica ,java fern ,patches of hair grass ,1 fake plant

update a month later

Here's a couple of pics before i do a sand vacuum and water change ..im writing this fast

i'm experimenting with low light details for my tank plants

40 watts aqua glo . 12 hours of light from 9am to 9pm .no fertilizer or co2 used ......just fish poop and raking the sand every 3 days or 4.

im keeping a close eye on the sword and shes holding up good

, i have two 6500 k daylight bulbs and fertilizer tabs for the sword as a back up for the plants if everything fails.so far so good

when i bought the dwarf hair grass ,it was about two inches wide and inch high .its been growing and ive been splitting it apart and putting it in different parts in the tank

ive decided to keep sandy out of the tank

Looking good. I really like that--lots of places for the fish to hide, and very natural looking too. Good going!

I never thought of using scotch bright pads ( i like that idea ) .As for now, i'm using floss in one filter and the other filter i'm using cut up piece of ac110, 500 sponges .

Thanks ..All those hiding spots for my 20 little henchman --->(that's what i call them )and they don't even bother using those hiding spots .They just chase each other around the mid part of the tank playing tag your it .Its fun to watch though.
