internal to external filter change

Hi
i have just purchased a fluval 206 external filter, and at the moment have a fluval u300 running in the tank ,i have been told by one person to run the two together for 6-8 weeks but have also been told to put the carbon , pads etc from the old to the new and use just the new filter.
any advice would be gratefully received.

If it's an established tank (older than 6 months or so), there is much more beneficial biology in the substrate than in the filter. You could just put the old pads in the new filter and it would be fine.
