I am still trying to figure out where the ammonia came from. It is possible that it came from the substrate added from the other tank.
Test your tap water for ammonia. If there is ammonia in the tap, a water conditioner that detoxifies ammonia, such as Prime, would be good to use.

don't mean to sound like a nervous nellie...... I did another check, and ammonia levels are between 0 and .25ppm. I had my wife give her opinion on the color of the test solution. She agreed. Maybe I didn't perform the test properly before..... Nitrates are still at 5ppm (and I shook the 2nd bottle 2 minutes as suggested in another forum). Nitrites are at 0. carbon insert has been removed, and the water is still crystal clear.

The ammonia didn't show until I used the donated substrate...I used a small amount (about a half pound) when I seeded the tank. I may perform a small water change to insure everything is ok.

As far as the guppies, they ate this morning, and they appear fine. one is crazy active, and the other stays at the top of the tank. occasionally he will swim around the tank. They take turns occasionally chasing each other. and they hide when someone gets close to the tank. after about 2-3 minutes they come out of the plants and swim around.

Thanks for the advice...

after a 10% water change yesterday, my test results are:

ph 7.6
ammonia 0 ppm :)
nitrites 0 ppm
nitrates 5.0 ppm

the fish seem well adjusted, but they scared me this morning when I got up for work.... I have discoverd that guppies will sleep on the substrate on the bottom of the tank.

Hannah gave me a good report today, and our new little friends are doing well, they seem to hide at times, but eat viraciously. this is cool.... I will continue with pictures soon

HOLY AMMONIA SPIKE BATMAN

one of the guppies in the tank looks terrible. He looked and acted fine this morning, and my daughter gave me a report this afternoon.....

I immediately performed a water quality test when I came home from work, just as we have done every other day since setup. Our results are:

ph 7.6
ammonia 1.0ppm
nitrites 0 ppm
nitrates 5.0 ppm

Honestly, I did not see this coming, I mean BAM, out of nowhere. By reading this forum, my first action was to perform a 40 percent water change. and I will retest and repeat water change if necessary tomorrow. Any words of wisdom???

I hope the little guy pulls through, he was so full of life this morning. And the other one acts fine? His color is dull, he is lethargic, and just mopes in the plants, or at the bottom of the tank....

I guess time will tell, I just hate the first fatality may come only 9 days into this project

i would just do water changes for like 3 days more then try 1 day without with a water test in the morning and at night. if there is a change between them then i would take out the seeded gravel if posible.
