DO refers to amount of oxygen compound dissolved in water. Oxygen is an important factor that fuels life for living things, it is important to human beings as it is to shrimps. Based on my experience, i would like to share how oxygen plays a big part in any aquarium keeping.
First, i would like to discuss on how DO plays an important part in the initial stage of aquarium keeping, NITROGEN CYCLE. For those that are unsure of this nitrogen cycle, Its a process where ammonia gets broken down to nitrites and subsequently from nitrites to nitrates. But it is growth of bacteria that takes part in this nitrogen cycle that is of concern. For these bacteria to thrive, DO plays a critical role. With a saturated amount of DO in your water, this will help speed up the growth of these bacteria. During the cycling of your new tank, we try not to do any water changes as these will remove DO from the water. It will also remove ammonia and nitrites that promotes the growth of nitifying bacteria. For my new 2ft tank, i introduced aeration (through my lily pipe) and also using a sponge filter to increase the amount of DO. My cycling process took a total of 3 weeks. Try it out yourself. Third, what relationship does plants, co2, ph and DO share? We all know that plants will take in co2 when a light source is available. During this period, oxygen is being produced as a by-product of photosynthesis. The decrease of co2 and increase of DO will cause PH of the water to rise. When the lights are off, plants consume oxygen and produce co2. During this stage, the PH of the water will drop. CO2 has an inverse relationship with PH, Oxygen has a direct relationship with PH. So what is important here for shrimp keeping, if there is too much plants in your tank, you might experience high level of PH swing and this is not good for shrimps. You might like to reconsider the type/amount of plants you will like to keep in your tank.
Lastly, who consumes the DO in the water? As mentioned above, plants is one of them. Lets not talk about livestock first. When plants decay and dies, the decaying process actually requires oxygen for the breakdown process. Ensure that you do not have too much decaying plants in your tank. Reason? Keep the DO in your water for your livestocks. For me, my shrimps takes first priority. No plants or decaying bacteria should be competing for DO with my shrimps.
