Yes, a water testing kit is a necessity!! That way you can keep track of your cycling process and its a quick way to eliminate water quality issues when your fish are sick.
If their colours have brighten thats a really good sign... Not sure why your water would be cloudy? Normally its from excessive amounts of waste, like over feeding or perhaps an unnoticed dead buddy. Are you doing regular gravel vacs too? Maybe theres a lot of rotting waste kicking in your gravel. Do a gravel vac and see if that helps.
But definitely buy a water testing kit, and asap!! I recommend API liquid mater test kit, with ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and pH.
