Ideas for stocking new aquarium

I got a new 55 gal tank and Im having trouble on deciding what to stock it with. I want a nice community tank and im kinda new to the whole community thing (my other tanks are a puffer, and the other african cichlids). I would like to have maybe two schools (like tetras) but also a few medium sized fish/larger fish ( I want people to ooow and ahh). Oh and im going to do live plants so nothing thats gonna munch on those. Thats just my idea but Im open to any idea.

Thanks

What are your water parameters (pH and KH)? Suggestion fish to you without knowing these would be foolish to do.

Barbs would perhaps be a nice addition? Tigers, Cherry, Gold, or Odessa? (Before anyone replies to this... yes I have an addiction to barbs... ).
