Ideas on changing substrate

Hey, well i'm planning on switching from gravel to sand soon, mainly for my kuhli loaches. I hate seeing cuts on their bodies): I'm planning on getting estes marine sand since i've read that it's nearly the best sand out there. I'm getting 15lbs for 10 gallons but i'm wondering on how i should go about changing the substrate. Do i remove the water from the tank and the fish along with it then as quickly as possible shovel the gravel into tights/panty hose, then put sand in, then refill with water(75% water from before the chagne, 25% new?), let the tights float onside with gravel inside to avoid mini-cycle, and leave the filter off for a couple hours to prevent any problems with it? I'm not sure. i do not wanna break my filter and i do not want to harm my fish, but this is for the sake of my loaches, since i always see them trying to burrow and being unsuccessful):

reply to PM sent.

when you set up a new tank, hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor, that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.
