I'm making a second filter for my tank-how to clean materials

I'm going to be making a second filter for my 10g community tank. I've poked around and looked up some really interesting DIY techniquces and I've settled on one model.

It uses a plastic water bottle, gravel and filter mesh/sponge(as media), PVC piping and a air pump.

My question is: How do I go about getting all of the material clean and safe for my tank?

Thanks guys!

RIP Purp

This question mya do better in the DIY forum
I would say to get everything ready for your tank, I would clean it with hot water and then rinse well or soak it in water from your tank when you do a PWC.
I love having more than one filter, that way you can clean one or the other and not risk messing with your Bio if you too good of a job cleaning.

What filter do you have now???
Do you have any plants??
What fish are in the tank???
Do you have a pic of the tank???

I have a regular HOB filter standard for a 10g tank. The plant was entirely planted, however I ran into a huge algae problem and it was much easier to remove all of my plants, so now I only have elodea in the tank. Which is fine by me because it grows quickly and I'll soon have enough to replant the entire tank.

I have neons, cories, and ADF's in the tank. I'll post a picture in a few hours. I'm not home at the moment.

The water is still a little green. I just got done battling green water and algae.
