You'll need more sand if you want to put plants in it than if you don't. One pound per gallon is an okay guideline. However, it does not take into account the dimensions of the tank. For example, a 110 gallon tank does not need any more substrate than a 75 gallon, since they have the same footprint.

I used two bags (25kg, 55 lbs) of play sand for my 115g which is 5 feet by 1.5 feet substrate surface. The sand is about 2.5 to 3 inches overall depth, and this is adequate for plants.

150 pounds will do well enough. However if doing a planted set up, go ahead and get the extra 50 to equal 200 pounds worth.

I have 100 pounds of play sand(that i hate.i should've used beach sand instead like i did in my other tanks in the past) in a 90 gallon .Base is about 2- 3 inches high with one sword plant and about 8 little bushes of dwarf hair grass that keeps growing like crazy..

try one bag out of the time, if that don't look good, try the 2nd bag,if that dont look good try 2 and a half bags

1 - 10 gallon - cray fish
1 - 90 gallon tank- 32 tiger barbs ,1 pleco ,2 snails.1 amazon sword , 1 red lotus , bushes of water sprite , 12 stems of rotala indica ,java fern ,patches of hair grass ,1 fake plant
