Are you testing your water? If not you should if you aren't going to do weekly WC's. If you are lightly stocked 20-25% weekly should be fine.

Point is though...you can do very large WC's every week and not harm your tank like your mom is suggesting.

yeah, my mom says i should only do a change 4-6 weeks. I'm planning on adding more fish, so i think if I change just a little more water every week it should be fine when i introduce the new fish.

haha...I probably do spend too much time on here. I really actually should be doing a WC...all this talk and advice and I'm not even following my own....lol

I think the general rule is...25% weekly or 50% every two weeks. That is just a guideline and there are many variables. One being plants. Plants can prolong the time between WC...some people never do them with a heavy plant load, some have to still do weekly 50% changes. No plants and light stocking, I'd say 15-25% weekly is good or 25-50% every two weeks.

PH of 7 may not be good for your fish depending on what you keep, but that's off topic. Testing water is very important, even those who are new to the hobby should get into the habit of testing your water.

How long has your tank been set up? New tanks require more water changes to help keep ammonia levels and nitrite levels under control, even in lightly stocked tanks. Mature tanks will have a more stable chemistry and, in lightly stocked tanks, can handle less water changes.

If you give us the age of your tank, size, filtration, and stock, we may be able to help assess if you are changing enough water each week.

My tank has been set up from like july/august, so it's not very new. It is 29 gallons, and has a penguin BIO-Wheel filter with Rite-Size Filter cartridges. I currently have one bushynose catfish, 5 neons, and 2 zebra danios I used for cycling. I plan to add a few more platys, and some other unknown fish. I originally also wanted to add 2 kribs, but they apparently got too aggressive once big, so I don't know what else, but I probably will add more fish. Thanks!
