Get a bucket of tank water, add a handful of fishfoods and then rocks in there. Put the bucket under direct sunlight. Should have algae in a few days and you can use the algae coated rocks for the pleco.

Diatoms aren't necessarily bad. Most plecos do like diatoms.

hi
would it be possible for you to place small rocks into a glass jar
with the water and put it on a windowsill for the sunlight ?
i did this,it took some time, but it did work.
:)

when you set up a new tank, hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor, that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.

or just use a strong light indoors. a halogen shop light works fine. i use it for my algae screen system.
