How to clean leftovers w/o massive water changes

Hi all,

I like to give my betta (bay-ta :) ) a nice variety to his diet. One of the things I feed him is a tiny piece (about 1/8th) of an algae disc every couple of days.

He seems to like it, taking bites of it every now and then. But I always have a good bit of it left on the bottom of the tank later on. I've been gravel vaccing it out, so I end up doing about a 15-20% water change (in a 5 gallon) 2 sometimes three times a week.

I was just wondering how you all get leftovers out like that, and how long they can be in the tank before cleaning them out. I normally clean it out a couple of hours after giving it to him, or at most the next afternoon when I get into work if I gave it to him right before leaving work.

Thanks.

I tend to use shrimp and weekly vacuuming for cleaning up. :)
