Homemade Fish Food

I am thinking about trying my own fish food. I have seen videos on others making this, especially with their discus and salt fish, but I am curious on how to go about this.

I have seen people combine beef heart, different greens, flake food and various pellet foods. I've also see people add minced garlic or garlic powder to these homemade recipes.

I have plenty flakes and pellets, frozen blood worms, frozen plankton, frozen brine shrimp, and also minced garlic and garlic powder. I cant, for the life of me, find beef heart. How should I go about this? Like what meats, vegetables, and/or lettuce should I buy?

I can only find it frozen at the pet stores. The few times I made fresh I used raw shrimp, blanched spinach and garlic cloves . Mashed it into a paste & froze it in ziplocks. My community tank was crazy for it!

You can often find beefhearts through a butcher, or an outfit that deals with beef on a wholesale basis. They type of places that sell hindquarters & sides of beef usually have plenty of hearts. If you know someone that hunts deer have them save you the heart, works just as well as beef, and hasn't been exposed to hormones or antibiotics that are often used with raising livestock.

I get in a hindquarter of organic beef a few times a year, get the heart tossed in for free. No exact science to how much garlic & so on to add, I pretty much eyeball it to be half, maybe 60% heart, the rest things such as spinach, fish fillets, flake food, multivitamins & such.

I used three or four large shrimp and one big clove of garlic and a handful of fresh spinach. It all depends on how much you want to make but the shrimp was the main ingredient.

Good luck.
