high nitrites

I redid my 55 gallon tank last Saturday. Since the filter was cleaned pretty thoroughly and was just sitting in a bucket for a few hours, I decided to check the parameters. Ammonia is 0, but nitrites is 0.25. Was this because my filter was a bit disturbed? How worried should I be? is this level too high? My betta has been acting lethargic for the past two days or so. Could it be because the nitrates being >0?
Thanks!

Nitrite at 0.25ppm is not dangerous, probably not even noticeable. It should have recovered (to 0.0ppm) by now.

After a major cleaning, the tank doesn't "smell" the same. Your fish might not recognize "home."

This post is on Sat. Nov. 30th. How is he now?
