high nitrates and bad smell from tank

Hello Everyone,
This is my first post and I am hoping I can get some help. We have had to bring in our pond fish due to a leak in our liner... We have a 55 gallon tank and have 15 good size perhaps 5 to 6 inch fish. They have been in the tank for just under a week and the room they are in really smells... the water is a bit cloudy and the nitrates are very high... Everything else seems to be in line..... We used the pond water in the hopes the fish would not be too stressed... I have done water changes, cleaned filers and added Nutrafin Cycle... Still I cannot get the nitrates down and I know if it goes much longer my fish will be dead... If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.... I did go to fish store and they gave me Tetra Safe Start... I am not sure if I should be adding that... Please help...

Thank you so much.

Hi Tweety,

Welcome to the forum. It sounds to me like your filtration cant' keep up with the bioload of your tank. The only way you're going to be able to keep the nitrates down is with very frequent water changes. Try 50% every day until nitrates are under control.

Good luck.

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.

Hi, Thank you for your help.. I was beginning to think it was the filter, or that there are too many fish... I am going to go and get 2 new filters today and see if that helps... I will also take your advise and do the water changes... Thank you for your help.

Are you siphoning the gravel (if there is gravel) when you change the water?

hello and welcome.
have you been able to use old filter media from the filtering system
you had in the pond ?

when you set up a new tank, hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor, that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.
