I've never really used an indicator to test my gH, I just get all of the information and do the math, but... if you've been using the test kit for 6+ years, and you have never seen such high levels in the water, then your utility provider may have changed what is added or the amount that is added to your tap water. That would be a reasonable explanation to me. To lower these levels, you may consider (a) adding peat moss to the water or (b) removing a certain percentage of the water and replacing it with distilled water so as to achieve the gH that you want. Bottled water isn't necessarily softer. In fact, it's about the same hardness as your tap water.
