A lot of people have been seeming to have this issue...ammonia readings but 0 nitrites and a good ppm of nitrates, as well as cloudy water.
For the cloudy water...could it be high phosphates? You can get a test for it, or buy phosphate remover. I doubt its a bacteria bloom, as that wouldnt give you the ammonia I dont believe.
It could also be an ineffective filter...it seems like they just dont make them like they use to anymore.
What filter are you running and what is the gph on it?
8 med/lg cichlids (depending on species) could be overcrowding causing the ammonia and the cloudiness. Cichlids are very messy fishies!
For starters, try doing small 15-25% water changes every other day, or when ammonia spikes, for a few weeks and see if that helps, if it isnt phosphates or an issue with the filter being below par for your tank's needs.
Good Luck and hope we can help you figure out the issue.
(I am not having ammonia issues, but a cloudy issue...and mine is due to an insufficent filter, and a little bit of overcrowding...working on re-homing my small shoal of rasboras.)
