I asked that very question when I bought my very pale red tailed black shark, a baby... why are those so pretty? They said to feed him, and everyone in the tank a cube of frozen blood worms once a week to enhance colour. It seems to work.... he's very pretty now. The rest of the time he gets plain old flakes.

I feed my fish a varied diet. I have many different types of food that I offer throughout the week. The main staple is a good quality pellet or flake (depending on the fish). I have a couple different types of pellets and flake as well as a Spirulina flake. I'll also feed various frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, krill and chopped fresh market shrimp as well as some sun-dried whole shrimp. These are offered maybe twice a week. Occasionally I'll feed them some fresh veggies such as de-shelled peas and blanched zucchini. I think varying the foods like this ensures that they are getting the nutrition needed and they also seem to love the variety.

Mine get a mix of frozen blood worms, brine shrimp, daphnie, and also flakes. I switch it up at each feeding because I know I like variety and they seem to as well.

As soon as I get my tank stocked I am going to feed my cichlids Omega one flakes and cichlid pellets as the staple foods. I am also going to treat them to live brine shrimp once a week. Hopefully this will give them the nutrients they need for them to be super duper colorful
