Help With Type Of Hair Algae?

Hey everyone,

I have this type of hair algae on all my live plants, and thats it. I believe its a type of hair algae (Long and stringy) and am thinking it might be Staghorn. I've tried everything to try and get rid of it but just can't get the pesky stuff out of the tank! Any help?

Matt

Yes, identifying the algae will help.

Speaking very generally, all green and red types of algae can be controlled by light. In a planted tank, light has to meet the needs of the plants in its intensity, and then nutrients have to be available to balance. The duration of the light is then monitored so the balance remains during the period of light.

If the light exceeds the nutrient balance, either in intensity or duration, algae will take advantage and increase. In each tank it may be different algae species that do this; I have to watch out for brush algae, I never see the other types. I control the algae by reducing the duration down to the point where nutrients obviosly balance it, since I know the intensity is not above what the plants require.

Byron.
