Arrow [HELP] Taking care of good fish in a bad tank

For a school experiment, I need to maintain 5 comet goldfish for the duration of the tests, a month.

Unfortunately, due to time restrictions, the tank, by good fish keeping standards, is horrible.

The fish, 5 of them, are Comets. 3 inches in size from a cheap petstore that keeps 20 of them in a 10 gallon tank.

The tank, 20 gallons, upper filter w/ activated carbon & bio ceramic & that filter cloth thing, air pump, no decorations, water's relatively cold (I know goldfish like that). Worst of all, it's UNCYCLED *gasp*, so they're prone to ammonia poisoning.

After the experiment I'll give back to the store to sell to someone who actually has a good tank.

For now...

How often should I change the water? Since it's uncycled and I have to feed them twice a day, there'll be ammonia buildup for sure. I'm thinking, 50% change twice a week?

Thanks in advance
Help me keep 5 Comets alive in a bad tank.

Remember, they're just 3 inches, but there are 5 of them in a 20 gallon uncyled tank

hello and welcome,
do you keep fish your self ?

when you set up a new tank, hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor, that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.

Welcome to TFK!

I think water changes will probably need to be even more frequent than twice-weekly 50% changes. I would get yourself a good liquid test kit and do a water change whenever ammonia or nitrite climbs into the readable range.
