My 20 gallon does not use a fraction of the power that my 5000 BTU window AC uses.

My 55s don't even use that much power.

I have a 20 gallon high tank with platies, it's a good size tank. I would have preferred a long, but didn't know any better when I started out, it turned out ok, My platies produce fry on a regular basis, and platies come in so many different color varieties, they're a great fish for that size tank.

I bought a aqueon 50 watt heater, would that be enough to keep my tank at a nice 78 degrees in the winter?

This is the heater guide for your particular heater. Check the chart vs. your room temperature.
