Help! Pebbles and Sand in One!

So I wonder if I can layer pebbles and sand together.. the bottom layer is pebbles and on top of it is sand.. and I know that you're thinking that the smaller size sand particles may fall down beneath the pebbles while the large ones remain on top. But, what if I add more sand that it fills the bottom with smaller sand and on top is a balanced size sand particles.. will that be okay?

and also, I wonder if my plan succeed. Can I plant my plants between the layers? I currently have java ferns only.

i was also thinking the same thing about the sand in the gravel im going to try it tomorrow so ill let u know.

java ferns cannot be planted in gravel ,they need to be tied to bogwood or stone etc.If they are planted in gravel the roots start to rot.

I have tried it and it works.. The sand just fills all the gap between.

If the look you want is sand on top, then why use pebbles at all? You will need more sand, and have a deeper substrate than necessary. Which can cause issues.

I added sand to a [fine] gravel substrate and it has been just fine.
