If you are talking about apple snail, i would avoid it. You only have 5 gallons to work with, and snails take up space just like fish do. If you get the snail it will limit your choices of fish in the future. Also the original stock of fish you had was overstocking the tank i believe, there is a basic rule of 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon of water. Although the count should really be with bioload vs gallons filtered, the inch per gallon rule is the safest for beginners.

That's true. Snails will limit the room I have for fish later on. Is there a small, temperature hardy fish I could later introduce to take care of that old fish food? Mabye a sucker fish?

i would feed less, a half pinch to entice the fish if hes hungry. If not let the food rot, it will help cycle your tank. as long you don't drop too much food the effect on your ammonia will be small and since the fish is not eating hes also not pooping much.

You could add a couple ghost shrimp to help eat the left over food. They don't add much to the bioload and they're great scavengers. But you may want to wait until the tank is cycled to add them. I'm not sure how sensitive they are to ammonia/nitrites.

150 Gallon - Mostly American Cichlids
135 Gallon - Angelfish Community
75 Gallon - Odd couple (Polleni/Angelfish)
55 Gallon - African tank
20 Gallon Long - QT
10 Gallon - Empty
