HELP heater failure.....

I have had an atman heater for about 1 1/2 now and i don't think that it's working anymore. I own one betta in a 5 gallon tank and bought the heater when i bought him. I got a thermometer and dropped it in and it reads 20 degrees Celsius! Ok i didn't freak out. The Heater was set to 24 degrees and so think it that maybe raising the temperature setting to 26 would raise it to 24. Crossed my fingers and nothing happened.Still 21 degrees so i now have two questions. Could it be that my thermometer is giving me a false reading. It's NOT digital it's one of those normal thermometers. I don't think it's possible, but it's worth to ask. Now i am probably going to buy a new heater so is the Marineland Visi-Therm Stealth Submersible Aquarium Heater any good? If you don't have a opinion on this question it's ok i just really need to know if it's the heater or the thermometer giving me a false reading?

Thanks in advance, i'm new to this forum so i'm sorry if i posted this in the wrong place.

Marineland makes great products. I have several heaters and have no problem with any of them, but the Marineland one is exceptional. If it's going to be a bit before you get your new heater, since it's such a small tank I might consider putting an electric heating pad or something like that underneath the tank. Be careful and monitor the temperature for a while (though I don't think this method could OVERheat your tank). It might just give you a bit of buffer room that you need.

Thanks so much! I will be getting the new heater tomorrow. The funny thing with the heater i have now is that it does heat the tank to 24 degrees when set to 26, but does not turn on until it drops 4 degrees. Bad temperature fluctuation. So i'm still going to get a new one.

+1 on the Marineland Visatherm. I have a 50w in my 5 gallon because it gets really cold here in the winter and we like to keep the heat at 60F overnight.

Ok i forgot to thank all of you for your input on this, but now i have run into another problem. I live in Canada and the petsmart here does not carry the Marineland Heater! Some products are only available in the USA. Is it worth it for me to ship one here. Right now it's about $30 IF i could buy it here. It's about $40-45 Cdn after shipping. So is it worth it. The only heaters that are offered at my local Petsmart is the top fin heater and a Fluval. I have the links below and i have read the review on there website and they don't look too good. If any of you own any of the heaters below i would love your input. Thanks!

I wouldn't worry too much about those reviews. A few of the people who had something negative to say didin't realize that the light goes on and off all the time when the heater switches on to regulate the temperature. Just be sure to get one that has the temperature that you can set and move up or down. Those preset ones are iffy at best (IMO anyway).

If you have a Petco near you, I bought one of their store brand submersible heaters bc they were out of what I wanted and I needed one that night. It's been working perfectly for about 2 years now.

Good luck.

Fluvial is a fine brand name. I've not heard anything particularly horrible about any of their products. I think you'll be fine with whatever they have at your Petco or Petsmart. No need to get customs involved.

Heater problems?I have had alot of trouble with different types of aquarium heaters too.. I have had the same problems with overheating and then the heaters will quit working or be so radical in the temp variances it's scary! I use marineland stealth visi-therm heaters in all my aquariums[ 10 are currently in use]. I like them because they are sturdy[ no glass to break and are also inconspicuous, and are completely submersible.. But, i had 6 of them go nuts 3 years ago... I replaced them through the company and found out that the marineland company had a recall on them for these problems.. The newest version to correct these problems has a lighted adjustment knob to indicate whether or not the heater is "on"... Heaters are expensive, and so is your livestock... It is frustrating, huh...? I don't like the glass models as they can and do break[ my oscars taught me that years ago...] and the titanium models are outrageous in price[ my personal opinion only ] i still advocate the stealths, but perhaps one of the other members can suggest/recommend another a product? The stealth heaters i have now appear to be behaving themselves... Cindy
