Help!

Hello everyone. My tank is now in the 6th week of cycling. I'm finally getting some nitrite readings. I had to leave for two days and I'm doing a water change now. I've noticed that on one of my fake green plants, the largest of them all, I'm getting a whole bunch of these brownish color areas on the leaves. They are similar to the color of a burn. Whatever it is on the plant comes off easily if I rub a spot with my finger. Does anyone have any idea what this is? I don't know if it's algae or what. I figured if it was algae I would see it all over the place and not on one particular plant. My instinct is to get the plant out of there but I'm afraid that stuff might contain good bacteria. I just don't know. Any ideas??

Thanks for the help.

If it's brownish and you can easily dust it off with your fingers it's probably diatom algae which is common on new tanks. Just dust it off before you do your water change. Eventually it should go away but sometimes it takes awhile. My 37 gallon which was set up in July of this year still gets some but it's better than it was.

brown diatoms are common, any algae eater will eat it, so will snails, if your looking for a natural way to get rid of them. Otherwise, as jeaninel said, use ur fingers
