Common Plecos, like many other "algae eaters" generally will stop eating algae once past the juvenile stage. These also will grow 12"+ I had a common pleco that came with a tank I bought. I thought it was quite big, until I donated it to my LFS and saw some of the others that they had. This was due to the fact that the tank was only 35g and had resulted in stunted growth. Dont confuse this with "growing to the size of the tank". That is a myth. Fish are just like humans and will only stop growing when they are at full size for their genetics. Stunting growth means that the fish is unhealthy and will die much earlier then it should.
In all honesty I would see if you can return ALL your fish to the store and start over. I dont mean to sound like I'm yelling at you, I'm just rather angry that the store would give you such false information.
I was waiting for someone to mention how big my "allergy eater" would get lol.
