Just to add my new ten gallon is sitting fish less right now as I started its cycle today. Its full of water and has all its decor in place and I treated the water to start they cycle. It will be done fishless. I am using shrimp pellets as the sourse of ammonia I at the moment only have six fish, a small sail in pleco in the five gallon alone and the rest are in the original ten gallon and it has already gone thru its cycle all be it a fish in cycle. Once the cycle is complete in the new ten gallon the lone chiclid I have will be in it alone for about a month till the 55 gal on has a chance to cycle.
A snail will not be enough to cycle the 55g tank..it would be better off if you got a raw shrimp and put that in the tank..it will be quite messy so you would be best putting it in a mesh media bag or part of a female stocking.
With regards to using the fry as feeders for the Cichlids, bad idea, cichlids would be better off, on high quality cichlid flakes and pellets. The risk of them developing "Malawi Bloat" which is lethal to them is too high on a diet of feeder..I would not even recommend it for a treat.
In the 55g tank once it is cycled you can keep 12-15 Cichlids with a maximum of three species and 2-3 bottom feeder synodontis or BN plecos.
I dont have a base fo it yet. my friend Jason will be getting the wood to build it this weekend. once its built I will start that one up. cant wait till I get it done though. My other two are in the middle of there cycle and my five gallon has reached its nitrite spike. the five gallon should be ready just in time for my platies to give birth. Posted via Mobile Device
