Does he still have the instruction sheets for even one of the filters? It lists exactly what should be put inside or see if you can find something online, instructions or something, or tomorrow call the store where it was purchased. I'm sure they can tell you exactly what to put in and in what order. They will have others there and can look it up for you. Good luck. So glad you wrote in here!!!

42 gallons is not really big enough for all those fish... I would tell him to give away a few of the goldfish and probably one of the plecos too. Goldfish and plecos are both messy eaters so feeding less is something he will need to do for sure. He might just want to stop feeding the plecos pellets all together or just feed them once a week. They will eat any extra food that the goldfish dont eat so they wont need to be fed all the time. Those filters should be doing a good job once he starts doing the things everyone has suggested. Do smaller water changes, feed less, dont clean both filters at the same time, and make sure to use water conditioner and everything should sort itself out.

Thanks guys,

I will give him this information tonight. He lives in Houston (I live in Louisiana). I will tell him and hopefully he will make the corrections and have a nice tank. I wish he would upgrade to a few of the tropicals as opposed to goldfish but he likes goldfish.

Will post back and let you know how it goes.

I always had at least one goldfish tank because I love them so I can see how some people would want to keep goldfish :) But they are definitely harder to manage than tropicals.
