H. O. T. Magnum- start up

I'm ready to set up an additional filter. I've read the instructions and it says to create a *drip loop* but does not tell me exactly what that is or how to create it. Any

The instructions also say that a slight rattling noise is normal *only during startup*. Well, I definitely heard this rattling so I shut it off since I don't know if this lack of a drip loop is causing this problem. Is this canister filter supposed to be *primed* before using?? I'm worried that by not knowing what the heck I'm doing I will burn out the pump! The wet/dry filtration is on & working great but I also want the Magnum for extra filtration.

I know that I can run the magnum with or w/o carbon. Since I already have the wet/dry in place should I go carbonless?

Thanks for any info sent my way!

not sure about priming a canister filter i dont have one. but a drip loop is just something you do with the wiring/hoses of things that go in your tank. there are lots of ways to make them.

Thanks for the info. In re-reading the instructions I see that a drip loop is only a configuration of the power cord, right? If so, d'oh on me!

Yes you must fill the canister with water to prime it before using. I fill my media basket one third to one half full of marine carbon (lower in ash than some) I use the HOT magnum after tank maint to help clean the water. Otherwise I don't use it much as it put's out considerable current in tank that Discus are not fond of . They or should IO say mine seem to work better when only one third to one half full of carbon. also , be sure and fill the canister with DECHLORINATED water before using it NOT tapwater. TRUST me.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to use the tank water to fill it/prime it. That seems to make sense to me.

With my Magnum 350 (which is old and very clunky) I have to turn it sideways/upside down to get it to start pumping water correctly. If you have trouble getting it to start, that should work.
