Gravel - Washing

I am full of questions today so I apologize. I have some black aquarium gravel from an old fish tank I had set up well over a year ago. I had the tank set up to cycle and then when we had to move, we just emptied the water out and stuck everything in storage, tank, gravel, light, filter, everything. Unfortunately there were also some aquatic plants in the tank so that tank has been sitting in storage with dead plants and gravel that has just been sitting there. I want to use the gravel again but I'm not sure the best way to clean it to make sure there is nothing bad transferring to the new tanks.
