I think with the Gourami I have, fish that are more out of his line of sight might work, such as those on the bottom or near the bottom.
I think I was thinking for some reason that this was a larger tank, but no matter...I think the Black Ruby Barb is OK in a group of 7 with the gourami. And substrate fish are fine, one of the smaller loach species, not the Botia kubotai you have, they get too big--I had my five (which are only 3 inches so far) in the 3-foot 33g temporarily while the 90g was being overhauled, and they were not happy, nor did they look right. Other small catfish would also work. Whiptail Catfish would be good here, as they also graze algae; larger Corydoras species, one of the smaller Hypancistrus (pleco) species, etc.
