so heres the plan, I have a goldfish in a ten gallon aquarium... which is way too small so i am going to find it a better home where it will be happier. so then i want to use the tank for a loner secretive catfish (still have no clue what species to get, got some ideas but none firm yet.) i want to have the bottom of the tank completely carpeted in some sort of grassy plant... what would be best? and also which plants would be best to grow to the top of the water and diffuse light?then i need to know... when i find the goldfish a new home... what do i do? just do a partial water change and gravel cleaning? i kindof want to just let plants grow in the tank for a while til it looks good then get the fish... is that a good idea? and would a catfish appreciate plants or should the tank be sparsley planted? if you have ideas on 10 gallon small catfish layouts please drop me a line!

Hi Hippie.

If you want carpet plants, you'll need a DIY CO2 and high lighting(about 3 or more wpg).:) Carpet plants are often demanding and with both CO2 and high lighting, you might have dose the nutirents frequently as they tend to use up nutrients pretty fast.

There is one thing that bothers me. If you like the whole bottom carpeted, you might have to skip most of the catfish or you'll end up having the plants uprooted messing the tank. Otos are good options in my opinion.

As for the goldfish, try to monitor the new tank for ammonia and nitrites. Get from your lfs an established filter media or gravel. This way, there is enough bacteria to quickly cycle the tank without endangering your goldfish quickly.

Live plants are better than just plecs IMHO.:) You don't really need to have a pleco. Otos are what I would suggest for you. More industrious consuming algae than plecs.

The heaven's side for tetras and rasboras please. They're mega cute, mind you.
