Goldfish and Tropical Fish

Periodically the question is asked about maintining goldfish in with tropical fish. Most of us recommend not doing this, though we may not have substantial knowledge as to why this is not advisable. So this article from Practical Fishkeeping may be of some value on this issue.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]

I read that article yesterday (Aussie time) - I like it! He's right in that 'tropical' can mean many things. But so can temperate. Confused yet? LOL

When I think tropical fish, I think those that require warmer, more steady temps. When I think temperate, I think unheated, roll with the seasons. I still lower my tank temps a little for my tropicals in the winter though.
